POV Point of View Series

P.O.V. What's New?

SEASON 21 ANNOUNCE

P.O.V. returns for our 21st season on June 24 with a powerful and provocative slate of films that explore the human stakes in such American election-year issues as war and peace, health care, border issues and race relations.

This year's films also provide unique journeys into family burdens of the not-so-distant past, into the weirdly familiar backrooms of Japanese politics, and up one of the world's most fabled — and fast disappearing — waterways: China's Yangtze River. Plus, the best Johnny Cash documentary ever.

FW: AMERICAN EXPERIENCE reprises FDR

American Experience: Monday nights on PBS

Stories to Go
In this week's podcast, hear excerpts from FDR's first inaugural speech, including his famous line, "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself."

Watch Online

Miss the broadcast on PBS? You can watch FDR, in its entirety, as well as full biographies of Presidents Truman, Johnson, Reagan, and George H.W. Bush on our web site. Later this month, films about Richard Nixon and Jimmy Carter will also be available online.

THE PRESIDENTS

Online. On TV. On the Go.
Is FDR's New Deal a good example of how the federal government should intervene in times of economic crisis? Was Truman right to use the atom bomb to end World War II? Should George H.W. Bush have commanded troops to continue on to Baghdad during the first Gulf War? What do you think? Log on to THE PRESIDENTS Online and connect today's issues with past 20th century presidents. Then, register for free to participate in the online discussion, and read comments from fellow viewers.

Make sure your voice is heard on Election Day

Still need to register to vote in your state's spring primary or the general election? Just visit the League of Women Voters' elections website, VOTE411.org, to get started.  Features include the only nationwide polling place locator, an online registration tool, important deadlines, absentee and overseas ballot information, candidate information, and specific details about voting in your state.

On TV Monday: FDR
Radio broadcasts beamed his voice into living rooms around the country; his picture hung on the wall. His wife was the most admired woman in the country. FDR goes beyond the familiar words and images to offer an incisive, often startling portrait of one of the most extraordinary personalities ever elected to the presidency. One of the nation's most popular presidents, Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected to four terms -- more than anyone before or since -- and led the country through two great crises of this century: the Great Depression and World War II.

Classroom Resources
Beginning later this month and until Inauguration Day 2009, download six Presidents programs free of charge for use in your classroom. The downloadable programs will include: FDR, Truman, LBJ, Nixon, Jimmy Carter, and Reagan.

Teacher's Guides
Ranging from Franklin Roosevelt's role in expanding the role of the federal government during the New Deal to George H.W. Bush's role in the final days of the Cold War; from the full-contact leadership style of Lyndon Johnson to the grand thematic leadership of Ronald Reagan, AMERICAN EXPERIENCE's award-winning presidential biographies explore not just big personalities, but big ideas. The guides below provide discussion topics and lesson plans for each film.

FDR: Research New Deal programs, read Franklin Roosevelt's Pearl Harbor speech, and explore oral histories.

TRUMAN: Investigate containment, the atomic bomb decision, women in the workforce, and early civil rights legislation.

LBJ: Learn about Congressional leadership, Vietnam policy, and programs of the Great Society.

NIXON: Investigate Watergate, other presidential scandals, and Nixon's policies towards China.

JIMMY CARTER: Explore the political rise of the South, presidential campaigns and elections, energy policy, inflation and unemployment, peace and war in the Middle East, the Iranian hostage crisis, and the role of ex-presidents.

REAGAN: Is government the solution to our problems, or is government itself the problem? Examine the philosophy of a popular but contradictory leader.

GEORGE H.W. BUSH: Look at the nature of modern political campaigns, American involvement in the Persian Gulf, international diplomacy, leadership and popular opinion, and more.

Coming Up Next: TRUMAN
Monday and Tuesday, May 25 and 26, 2008 at 9pm (check local listings)
He was a farmer, a haberdasher gone bankrupt, an unknown politician from Missouri who suddenly found himself president. Of all the men who had held office, he was the least prepared. Yet Harry S. Truman would have to end the war with Germany and Japan, decide whether to use the most terrible weapon ever devised, confront the Soviet Union, and wage war in Korea.

The final phase of the Pacific war during World War II saw a terrible
new tactic: massed kamikaze attacks on American ships by Japanese
planes. But the biggest kamikaze attack of all was the suicidal
mission of the super battleship Yamato, the largest, most advanced
warship of the day. In "Sinking the Supership," NOVA joins an
international team exploring the grave of this magnificent vessel to
learn the secrets of her design, her final mission, and the violent
events that brought her down.

Read more about Whitman's inspiration, his views on race and the Civil War, and his signature work, Leaves of Grass.

On TV Monday: Walt Whitman
Walt Whitman is one of the most-recognized figures in American history: poet, patriot and faithful advocate of democracy. But in his own time, critics denounced him as a "lunatic raving in pitiable delirium." They pronounced his signature book of poetry, Leaves of Grass, "slimy," "vile," and "beastly." Whitman's mission was simple, yet grand: to be the voice capable of uniting a polarized nation on the brink of Civil War.

On Monday, AMERICAN EXPERIENCE premieres Walt Whitman, a two-hour documentary from acclaimed filmmaker Mark Zwonitzer featuring Academy Award-winning actor Chris Cooper as the voice of America's first great poet. Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Yusef Komunyakaa, novelist Allan Gurganus, poet and essayist Martin Espada, and former Poet Laureate Billy Collins appear to recite some of Whitman's most important works, and reflect upon his enduring influence. The broadcast coincides with the Academy of American Poets' National Poetry Month.

Coming Up Next: Roberto Clemente
On December 31, 1972, Roberto Clemente, a thirty-eight-year-old baseball player for the Pittsburgh Pirates, boarded a DC-7 aircraft loaded with relief supplies for survivors of a catastrophic earthquake in Managua, Nicaragua. Shortly after take off, the overloaded aircraft plunged into the Atlantic Ocean, just one mile from the Puerto Rican coast. Roberto Clemente's body was never recovered. On Monday, April 21, PBS's AMERICAN EXPERIENCE premieres Roberto Clemente, a one-hour documentary about an exceptional baseball player and committed humanitarian, who challenged racial discrimination to become baseball's first Latino superstar.

THE PRESIDENTS To Go is a new series of election-year podcasts that connect today's election issues to past presidents.

In the latest episode, international relations professor Ernest May from Harvard's Kennedy School of Government and history professor Kristen Hoganson from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign discuss elections campaigns during times of war, and examine the role of military experience in presidential leadership.

On TV Monday: Minik, the Lost Eskimo

In April 1897, six polar Eskimos arrived in New York City. Far removed from the home they had known in Greenland, where their Inuit community numbered just 234 people, they found themselves in the heart of a teeming metropolis. The youngest of the band was seven-year-old Minik.
The Eskimos were the exotic cargo of explorer Robert Peary, whose ambitious quest to reach the North Pole would leave him unable to oversee the Eskimos' care once he left them in New York. Within months, four of the Eskimos died and one returned home, leaving Minik an orphan. For more than a decade, Robert Peary would persist in his efforts to reach the North Pole, while Minik struggled to create a home and an identity thousands of miles from his native land.
Minik, the Lost Eskimo tells the parallel stories of an Eskimo and an explorer whose meeting forever changed the many lives, and examines an overlooked chapter in the history of American exploration.

American Experience

Forward to Friend

American Experience: Monday nights on PBS

Stories to Go

Listen to a podcast featuring nature and wilderness photographer Michael Frye, who describes following in Ansel Adams' footsteps, working in Yosemite National Park.

Art or Document?

Is photography a fine art, equivalent to the other visual arts, or a documentary tool, best suited for recording the facts? Sample the debate, in these quotes from nearly 150 years of photographic history, and tell us what you think in this online poll.

Inside a View Camera

Ansel Adams used a view camera to create his iconic photographs of American landscapes. How does it work? Find out in this interactive feature.

On TV Monday: Ansel Adams
From the day that a 14-year-old Ansel Adams first saw the transcendent beauty of the Yosemite Valley, his life was, in his words, "colored and modulated by the great earth-gesture of the Sierra." Few American photographers have reached a wider audience than Adams, and none has had more impact on how Americans grasp the majesty of their continent. In this elegant, moving and lyrical portrait of the most eloquent and quintessentially American of photographers, producer Ric Burns seeks to explore the meaning and legacy of Adams' life and work. At the heart of the film are the great themes that absorbed Adams throughout his career: the beauty and fragility of "the American earth," the inseparable bond of man and nature, and the moral obligation the present owes to the future.
